1.7.8 The  An important development in coping research was the creation of Robert Folkman and Susan Lazarus’ Ways of Coping scale. This scale was devised to assess the extent to which one uses one of two general types of coping. Problem-focused coping is directed at problem solving or taking action to change the source of the stress. This scale is used to identify the thoughts and actions an individual has used to cope with a specific stressful encounter. The influence of Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) transactional theory of stress and coping is remarkable and remains the cornerstone of psychological stress and coping research across multiple fields.

The WCC is a well-known measure of coping responses derived from Lazarus' transactional model of stress.

Reliability has been assumed to be consistent as an attribute of the test.

In this chapter we review the key components of this theory, focusing specifically on the effectiveness of the problem‐focused and emotion Coping has long been recognized as an important construct in studying and dealing with people and their health. The Coping and Adaptation Processing Scale (CAPS) was initially developed to address unresolved issues in understanding and measuring the complex construct of coping. For example, the widely used instrument by Lazarus and Studies that use coping scales or measurements focused on measuring coping strategies for specific situations or stressors have been found to be more valid and reliable (Daniels and Harris, 2005, Lazarus and Folkman, 1984).

Problem-focused coping is cognitive and behavioral efforts to alter a stressful situation, and emotional-focused coping is cognitive and behavioral efforts to reduce the distress produced by a stressful situation. Folkman and Lazarus (1988) developed the ways of coping scale, a checklist of problem- and emotion-focused coping strategies that might be used in a variety of stressful situations. Carver et al. This chapter focuses on a metatheory of stress and coping, and advances five main points. Much of what is presented here has been detailed elsewhere (Lazarus and Folkman, 1984; Lazarus, 1966; Lazarus, DeLongis, Folkman and Gruen, 1985). Nonetheless, particularly important new efforts in this area are highlighted.

Lazarus classified eight such functions that most of us use for active coping. Coping has long been recognized as an important construct in studying and dealing with people and their health.
