Kierkegaard writes under the pseudonym "A" in his aesthetic opening. He says that the aesthetic of art is related to pleasure. He finds music to be a direct form of pleasure which elicits powerful responses from the imagination.

The length of this work shocked the reviewers of the day, leaving many unsure how to approach it. Either/Or was published in two volumes amounting to over 800 pages. Indeed, Kierkegaard's style throughout his philosophical works is highly idiosyncratic.
